The trip to Vienna was actually my husband’s brave idea. ‘Why don’t we go there? It’s a nice place’ he said one day. You don’t argue about the tastes so I fell in with his suggestion without a murmur. Means of transport: train Warsaw-Vienna (Westbahnhof). Weather – scorching African heat (+38C in shade). It was either the charm of the city or high temperatures that made me feel dizzy. Touring Vienna was the first trip I took in a slower pace. I wasn’t rushing frantically around the city like a mad Duracell bunny. Instead, I was thoroughly investigating the surrounding area from a bench in shade.

Wyprawa do Wiednia to zuchwały pomysł mojego męża. Pewnego dnia oświadczył: „A może tam? Tam ładnie jest.” O gustach się nie dyskutuje, więc tak już zostało. Transport – pociąg Warszawa- Wiedeń (Westbahnhof). Pogoda – iście afrykańska, bo aż+38C w cieniu przez 2 dni. Nie wiem czy to urok miasta, czy temperatura bardziej przyprawiały mnie o zawroty głowy. I to chyba pierwsza wycieczka, kiedy nie biegałam po mieście z mapą jak króliczek Duracella, tylko wnikliwie przyglądałam się wszystkiemu – z perspektywy ławki w cieniu.

The Belvedere Palace

Vienna is a capital of cleanness and elegance. The city bears a resemblance to Paris, but luckily, it doesn’t have this French-like lordliness, and it’s definitely safer. The only trouble we had was to get some food because the local grocery stores close quite early in the evening. For those who are wondering what to see in Vienna, I recommend a few spots (in random order).

Samo miasto bardzo eleganckie i czyste. Mnie przypomina Paryż, ale bez tego francuskiego zadęcia i jest dużo bezpieczniej. Jedyny problem jaki napotkaliśmy to upolowanie czegoś do zjedzenia, bo sklepy zamykają dość wcześnie. Dla tych, którzy zastanawiają się, co zobaczyć w Wiedniu, polecam kilka miejsc (kolejność przypadkowa):

Schonbrunn Palace & Garden - the imperial summer residence of the Habsburg monarchs. The opulent palace and beautiful formal gardens were to rival Versailles in magnificence and the Baroque style. Apparently, you must move into Maria Theresa’s house for a couple of days to visit every inch of the complex. We decided to hike up the hill to the Gloriette. From the top of the structure, you can take a glance at the palace and the city.

Schonbrunn Palace & Garden czyli letnia rezydencja cesarskiej dynastii Habsburgów z ogrodami imponujących rozmiarów. Trzeba chyba wprowadzić się do Marysi Tereski na kilka dni, żeby zajrzeć w każdy kąt. My zdecydowaliśmy się wdrapać na wzgórze z pawilonem. Z ostatniego piętra Gloriette rozciąga się piękny widok na pałac i miasto.

Walking in the labyrinth brought us [me] a lot of fun. You must run along the paths and face dead ends to get to a tree with a viewing platform in the middle of the maze. I ran in circles around the high hedged tracks. The green walls display desperate attempts to struggle through the thicket.

Dużą frajdę sprawiła nam [mi] również zabawa w parkowym labiryncie. Na środku plątaniny ścieżek i ślepych zaułków stoi drzewo z metalowym tarasem. Aby dotrzeć do celu, trzeba się trochę nabiegać pomiędzy przystrzyżonym wysokim żywopłotem. W zielonych ściankach muru widać desperackie próby przedarcia się siłą na skróty.

The Prater. For families with children or without children, or childlike people like me. London has its London Eye while Vienna has its Wiener Riesenrad – one of the oldest ferris wheel in the world. It was a birthday present for Emperor Franz Joseph and it has been spinning since 1897.

Prater. Dla rodzin z dziećmi, bez dzieci i dzieciuchów takich jak ja – rozrywka rodem z lunaparku. Londyn ma swoje London Eye, a Wiedeń – Wiener Riesenrad, jeden z najstarszych na świecie diabelskich młynów. To okrągłe cudo to urodzinowy prezent dla cesarza Franciszka Józefa i kręci się od 1897.
