Lisbon

We started our sightseeing around the River Tagus and the Parque dos Nacoes constructed for the Expo98. Modern architecture, scenic views and a large Vasco da Gama  shopping mall… But I definitely recommend  a path along the waterfront - an ideal place to take a stroll on a sunny day. We made for the Oceanario – a fantastic display of sea life with thousands species of exotic fish, sharks, sea turtles. Don’t miss it!

Nasz spacer po Lizbonie zaczęliśmy od zwiedzania okolicy Tagu i parku zbudowanym na Expo98 (Parque dos Nacoes). Nowoczesna architektura, śliczne widoki i wielkie centrum handlowe Vasco da Gamy… Polecam zwłaszcza spacer po nadbrzeżu - wspaniałe miejsce na spacer w słoneczny dzień. My skierowaliśmy się w stronę Oceanarium – niezwykła, żywa prezentacja morskich przestworzy z tysiącami różnych gatunków egzotycznych ryb, rekinów czy żółwi morskich. Warto to zobaczyć!

In the evening we went to the Marques of Pombal Square and a nearby Edward VII Park. Nice place but I didn’t go crazy over the views.
Wieczorem wybraliśmy się pod pomnik Markiza de Pombal oraz parku Edwarda VII, który znajduje się tuż obok. Miejsce ładne, ale nie oszalałam z wrażenia.

The next morning we went back to the bank of the river to see the rest of tourist attractions. So for a good start, we visited the Monument to the Discoveries (Padrao dos Descobrimentos) – a massive construction built for the 500-year anniversary of Henry the Navigator’s death and it’s a tribute to all explorers and navigators who set off from Portugal to discover the unknown. The monument is strongly symbolic in its  shape as it presents a huge caravel with the famous sea heroes on board – Vasco da Gama, Magellan etc.

Następnego ranka wróciliśmy nad rzekę, tym razem żeby zobaczyć kolejne atrakcje. Na dobry początek zwiedziliśmy Pomnik Odkrywców (Padrao dos Descobrimentos) – masywna konstrukcja wzniesiona w pięćsetną rocznicę śmierci Henryka Żeglarza upamiętnia okres wielkich odkryć geograficznych. Właśnie dlatego pomnik ma kształt ogromnego statku z załogą na pokładzie. Załoga i to nie byle jaką -  Vasco da Gama, Magellan itd.

A few steps further on, another highlight – The Belem Tower.  The façade of the fortified tower seems light and delicate but it’s a deceptive impression of the manueline style. When you enter the building and take a close look up you quickly notice its strength. 

Dwa kroki dalej czekała na nas kolejna architektoniczna niespodzianka – Torre de Belem. Wieża obronna z daleka wygląda jak lekka, delikatna budowla (to za sprawą stylu manuelińskiego). Kiedy weszliśmy do środka szybko się przekonałam, że pozory mylą…

Following our packed sightseeing itinerary, we went to the Commerce Square – a magnificent square in downtown Lisbon surrounded with colourful buildings and triumph arch from one side and open to the riverfront from the other with a statue of King Jose.

Realizując napięty program wycieczki, pojechaliśmy na Plac Comercio (Praca do Comercio) – ogromny plac w centrum miasta, z jednej strony otoczony kolorowymi budynkami oraz łukiem tryumfalnym, otwarty w stronę rzeki z drugiej z pomnikiem króla Jose w centrum.

From this point we strolled around the Alfama (the oldest district of Lisbon) until we got to the St George’ s Castle (Castelo de Sao Jorge). The way to the castle was an uphill struggle  - literally and metaphorically. First a mountaineering up the steep cobblestone streets, and then we couldn’t find the castle. The view made up for all the pain and trouble of the journey.

Stąd poszwendaliśmy się po Alfamie (najstarsza dzielnica Lizbony) aż dotarliśmy do zamku Św. Jerzego. Do zamku mieliśmy pod górkę – dosłownie i w przenośni. Najpierw wspinaczka wysokogórska po stromych, kamienistych uliczkach, a do tego nie mogliśmy trafić do zamku. Widoki osłodziły nieco wysiłek, pot i łzy podróży ;)

The last day we decided to visit the Lisbon Cathedral. The route initially appeared quite easy, despite that we had to ask the way. When we met a fairly old man I asked him politely in Spanish where the cathedral was. Hearing my Spanish, he snorted, shrugged his shoulders, turned on his heel and strode away.

Trzeciego dnia wybraliśmy się do lizbońskiej katedry. Niby prosta droga, a jednak musieliśmy pytać o drogę. Kiedy spotkaliśmy starszego pana, zapytałam uprzejmie po hiszpańsku w którą stronę do katedry. Ten –słysząc mój hiszpański, parsknął, wzruszył ramionami, odwrócił się na pięcie i poszedł… Do dziś zastanawiam, co miał na myśli…
